Apollo OS is an initiative by the Apollo Team to bring AROS into main stream M68k use, while enabling Vampire users to take full advantage of the extended hardware that powers their Amiga. AROS itself is already a great operating system and provides many modern features which on more traditional OS3 operating systems would require much work to setup and configure. Apollo OS can provide a feature rich authentic Amiga experience encompassing everything that was great about the Amiga, from the first boot.
The aim of Apollo OS to provide a best-in-class AROS experience on the M68k Amiga's, with a focus on the Vampire accelerator boards and Computers. AROS is cross platform, running on multiple architectures, something it does well. However, the M68k experience has been always somewhat disappointing with the default desktop environment being slow, almost to the point of being unusable. Apollo OS will focus on enhancing the AROS experience on M68k as well as Vampire powered Amigas.
Apollo OS is the tireless work of Pedro Cotter who has been unrelenting in customising an exceptional Amiga experience on Vampire based Amigas. Many of the changes specific to the Vampire have been done by some awesome AROS team members, such as Michael Schulz, Wawatok, Kalamatee and many others. At its heart, Apollo OS is AROS, which is the culmination of effort by highly motivated developers over many decades.
