Simulate the protocols or provide test suite #1

I recently wanted to see how this project was going, and see if I could make any contributions.
But I want to be sure that any changes were not breaking.
It would be good to have a test suite, even if that is just simulating the protocols and checking for error messages. But it is actually very difficult at the moment to simulate any single protocol in the library. Any ideas how to go about fixing this?
If you want people to help/contribute to this project this should be a high priority. Even if you don't, it would be very useful for yourself, to check for any regressions that you might introduce with new code.
