update the selected occurrence only of recurring event

I have a monthly recurring even that is a different day each month.
I created a recurring event for a day that is close to the day for all months.
I then edit the current month with the correct day for that month.
When I save the event it asks if I want to "update the selected occurrence only".
I say yes and it creates an event with the new date but leaves the original there.
Shouldn't it delete the original event?
