Description

So, I have the following idea: It's a good XRay plugin, but due to the many mods, it's very unsuitable for SMP servers, as technically speaking, you simply can't add every block you use to build a base in the config. Therefore, I suggest implementing a system where, starting at a certain coordinate, EVERYTHING is air and/or no longer visible.

Because the problem is, I can use tools like "Advanced XRay (Fabric Edition)" to filter for specific blocks and see them 100%, meaning I select one of the 1,000 blocks a player can use for a base, automatically bypassing the plugin.

I get the idea but what happens if a player gets close to a chunk section that is empty (or filled)? Would the whole section load in, just some blocks other the entire chunk? (FYI: A chunk is a 16x16 column for the entire world height and a section is a single 16x16x16 part of a chunk, so a chunk is made up of multiple stacked sections)

You have a good point. What if there was a function that replaced everything with stone instead of fake ore? Would that be possible? I mean everything, though. In theory, where there's a base, everything should be made of stone, or rather, everything should be under a certain coordinate. Otherwise, I really have no idea. SMP is no fun like this.

Ok than let's assume we fill in everything with stone. If a player enters a huge cave he would see flat stone walls at a certain distance if he is below the y cutoff. I don't see a way around that so unless you have an idea that would fix that I would rather not implement this in its current state.

So, I tested it out and added all the hidden blocks to the "hidden blocks" section. With regular X-ray, it works great, and I really don't see anything. However, if I use the XRay mod to filter by blocks, I see EVERYTHING.

The obfuscation step itself has a fixed performance cost, so adding more blocks does not affect chunk processing speed. The main factor to watch is memory usage: proximity-hidden blocks must be stored until they’re revealed when a player gets close. Each entry is compressed to 4 bytes (down from the original 8+), so even a few hundred additional blocks won’t cause noticeable issues as long as you have 1–2 GiB of memory available per 100 players.

It sounds like you may be mixing up obfuscation hidden blocks with proximity hidden blocks. Obfuscation only applies to blocks that are completely surrounded on all six sides by opaque blocks. Proximity hidden blocks, on the other hand, cover exposed or surface blocks that can’t be obfuscated in that way. To achieve the effect you’re looking for, you’ll need to add your target blocks to the proximity hidden blocks section instead. Our FAQ does explain each type in a bit more detail.
