BBCode parsing broken (by PHP upgrade?)

BBCode and smilies are failing to render properly, and according to commentary in a couple of threads preventing some posts from posting properly. This is particularly obvious in the signatures in this thread.

On another thread, I got this error message at the top of the page: [phpBB Debug] PHP Warning: in file [ROOT]/includes/bbcode.php on line 401: preg_replace(): The /e modifier is no longer supported, use preg_replace_callback instead. This page is also rendering strangely, with text in a font at least twice its proper size.

(I'm guessing this may have the same root cause as #26 ..? And it seems a bit like the return of #19, though it's nowhere near as severe as that was, yet.)

This goes to a bigger issue at hand, the upgrade of phpBB. We really need to get onto phpBB 3.2.8. This will give us the ability to develop mods as opposed to modifying the core code and also support the latest version of PHP.

The problem, of course, is that it will break the current theme. I say we go ahead and pull the plug and implement a public theme for now. If we desire to modify the source code of the old theme for nostalgia's sake, let's do it. But let's first get the forum in good shape.

I was going to open a new issue about smilies failing to render, in a couple of cases with 404 errors but mostly 500 errors, and then found this thread where I'd mentioned it already.

This screenshot shows the broken smilies and the log messages explaining why they're not there.
