Use when masking PANs/SSNs/emails in query results, producing realistic synthetic test data, or anonymizing data for non-production or compliance. IMPORTANT - this is an open-source component (MySQL Enterprise charges for masking) and is TECH PREVIEW in 8.4. It does NOT redact stored data or enforce access control: you call mask_*/gen_* functions explicitly in queries/views, and anyone with SELECT on the base table still sees raw values. Install requires creating the dictionary table FIRST, then INSTALL COMPONENT, then grants.

The data masking component provides functions to mask existing values (mask_*) and generate synthetic ones (gen_*) - open source, where MySQL Enterprise charges for masking. It is a presentation layer, not storage encryption or access control: stored data is unchanged, and the functions only transform values you pass through them in a query, view, or stored routine.

Version/status: Percona Server 8.4, tech preview. Dictionary data lives in mysql.masking_dictionaries. Admin functions need MASKING_DICTIONARIES_ADMIN.

Masking functions return NULL on NULL input; default mask char is usually X. Note mask_inner with margin1+margin2 >= length returns the string unchanged, while mask_outer masks it entirely.

On replicas, set component_masking_functions.dictionaries_flush_interval_seconds (8.4.4-4+) so the term cache refreshes after replicated changes.

Data masking is tech preview - the function list, install order, the mysql.session grant requirement, and GA status shift across point releases. Before relying on it, call search_percona_docs to confirm current behavior and status for your version, not as a fallback. The percona-dk corpus is rebuilt daily and is authoritative for Percona Server for MySQL.
