Older people with presbyopia (an estimated 25% of the total world population) often find "dark mode" (mostly black screen with small amounts of light colours) harder to read than "light mode" (mostly bright screen with small amounts of dark colours). If you're curious you can go look up the details, but the core of it is that reducing the light impinging on the eye causes the pupil to open, which gives the lens system a larger aperture and thus reduced focus depth. (This actually affects everyone, but younger people generally have strong enough eyes that they can force focus under poorer conditions, without really noticing that they're doing this.)
