Context Menu Option Appears Once, then Never Again (Shell Extension stuck disabled) #554

After installing FileConverter on a new Windows 11 PC, the context menu convert option appeared as expected. I went into settings to add two new presets (WebP at 80%, and WebP at 100%). After that, the context menu option vanished.

ShellxView shows that it is disabled. I can enable it, but when I refresh, it's just disabled again. I've tried restarting explorer as well as the whole PC.

I've tried repairing, reinstalling, and installing the previous version (2.0.1). I've only had the option appear once when I first installed. Now it doesn't show at all, even after a fresh install.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Install File Converter
  2. Right click and go to Show More Options, or shift+right click a media file

When upgrading from version 1.2.3 on Windows 8.1, the context menu simply disappears. I have to uninstall (edit: the latest version) and revert to 1.2.3

Interesting. I tried 1.2.3 (You typed 1.2.3 twice, so I'm not sure what version you actually reverted to). The convert option appeared again! But once more, after I added a new format (WebP) and saved, it vanished again. That's exactly what my original install did, but it never reappeared upon uninstall.
Puzzling. It seems like something is just constantly disabling it.

It happened to me today, too. It was working perfectly a few weeks ago...
Today, I converted some PSD to PNG, and it worked.
Then, I created a new preset with the scale at 50% exporting JPG and moved the PNG files to my Google Drive folder... After that, there's no way to have the FileConverter in the context menu again.

Win 11, Ver 2.0.2

EDIT: Deleting my new Preset made it work again.
I ended up modifying the existing preset.

Wow, that does fix it! So adding a preset breaks it. Duplicating one and changing it to the exact same settings does not break it.
There's something even weirder happening for me. I followed your steps at first.

  1. Delete the newly added preset, save and close settings.
  2. File Converter works again, yay!
  3. Go back into presets and duplicate a preset, then change it to do what you need. But...
  4. My original, deleted preset shows up in the settings. It does not show up in the File Converter menu.
  5. New duplicate-based preset shows up and works. Old ghost preset still doesn't show in the context menu.
