Chicago/Wisconsin bike trails:
-
Initial plan: Hiawatha train to Milwaukee (bike trail 80 miles to Manitowoc!! - overnight stay???) then ferry crossing into Michigan (Ludington), then take michigan amtrak down to chicago?
-
Apparently Hiawatha doesn't allow bikes anymore? (https://chi.streetsblog.org/2023/08/05/annoyingly-amtrak-has-cut-bicycle-capacity-on-hiawatha-service-but-bike-friendly-venture-cars-are-coming) >> Take your bicycle on Chicagoland's fairly bike-friendly Metra commuter railroad's Union Pacific North line to its Kenosha, WI,
-
Revised plan: Metra from Chicago to Kenosha WI with bike, then bike to Milwaukee on Oak River Trail. ... then just come back? or spend night in Milwaukee
-
oooooor. car +bike to milwaukee, then bike loops around oak trail, then pick up and drive to hotel and take car ferry to michigan, and do the same thing -> safer way to bike-pack / figure out what you need, but less fun bc no train
