resizing LVM partitions

When installing the ISO images for Malcolm or Hedgehog Linux, if the ISO installer options that use Linux's Logical Volume Management (LVM) framework were chosen and the partitions need to be adjusted (for example, a virtual disk was enlarged), the following steps can be used.

• Check out the current partition/LVM configuration
  • sudo pvs - shows output about physical volumes
  • sudo vgs - shows information about volume groups
  • sudo lvs - shows information about logical volumes
  • lsblk - list block devices and partitions
• Based on output from above commands, determine the physical disk (e.g., /dev/vda), partition (e.g., /dev/vda4), and logical volume (e.g., /dev/main/root) to work with. Replace things like /dev/vda, /dev/vda4, 4, /dev/main/root, etc. in the following examples with the correct values for your system.
• Make sure the GPT partition table is correct
  • sudo parted /dev/vda print
  • Type Fix if prompted Not all of the space available appears to be used...
• Resize the partition (by partition number) to use 100%
  • sudo parted -s /dev/vda resizepart 4 100%
• Resize the physical volume
  • sudo pvresize /dev/vda4
• Extend the logical volume
  • sudo lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/main/root
• Resize the filesystem (run df if you’re not sure what the filesystem type is, either ext4 or xfs)
  • for an ext4 filesystem (if you’re resizing the main root filesystem)
    • sudo resize2fs /dev/main/root
  • OR, for an xfs file system (if you're resizing an extra xfs filesystem)
    • sudo xfs_growfs /path/to/dev
• Check the new size and freespace
  • lsblk - list block devices and partitions
  • df - get free space
