X96 Max+ Ultra with Xorg session

I'm testing a X96 Max+ Ultra box. I can install the minimal desktop without issue. However I need to be able to run with Xorg and not wayland. When I disable wayland by setting it to false in the gdm3/daemon.conf file and reboot the box it goes through the normal boot sequence all the way to where is attempts to start the user session. At that point the boot enters and infinite loop which appears to just refresh the monitor every couple of seconds. Like the display is blinking.

On the older X96+ box I have everything works as planned.

Any thoughts as to what might be missing in the latest image that would prevent an xorg session for starting on boot? Auto login is not enabled.
