What are factors or mindsets that make an open-source community successful?

Hi mentors,

I applied for the three projects in the Fortran-lang organisation for GSoC 2026 project this year but wasn't selected. I completely respect the decision,
I am just starting with my career, and I admit that I have little knowledge about the open‑source community. There are numerous contributors, mentors, daily repos, projects, and many other small things that lead to big impacts, which keep the community alive. I want to become a part of the community.
Please give me your overviews and experiences: what factors or mindsets help someone survive and create impacts?
