lookup_or_generate maps on concrete objects

I don't think I'm currently properly handling the case where the associated abstract objects are changing for concrete keys passed in.

I am working on changing this so we get correct behavior when concrete objects are used--but significantly more effort will be needed to achieve comparable performance improvements in this case.
