Unexpected Error when merging metadate in Metadata Manager

What went wrong?

I was trying to merge books that showed as separate series names. In this case, 10 books are in He Who Fights With Monsters, and 2 are the same, but "with" is not capitalized. Selected both and tried to merge the 2 into the 10 ang got Unexpected Error. When I clicked the link for the 2, it showed me all 12, so maybe one screen cares about case while another doesn't?

How can we reproduce it?

1. Go to Metadata Manager and Choose Series (this happened with Languages as well)
2. Choose the items (2 in this case) that you want to merge.
3. Confirm the desired Target Value and click Confirm
4. Error

Sure thing. Here's exactly what I did today to try to reproduce:
In Metadata Manager I was showing 730 books in English and 1 in German. I tried to merge them all to English. Today I did not see the error, but the logs look like Grim is rewriting the metadata into every ePub (I am aware of the warning), even for the 730 that were already in English (unless I am misreading the logs, which is entirely possbile).

By the way, All books are now in English, so it did eventually work today.

Also, I just realized I was still on 3.0.0, in case that matters. I have updated now. By the way, metadata updates on smaller numbers of books didn't seem to have an issue.
