I am betting that overlays have negative impacts also for search engines.
Will need to prove it with evidence but it makes total sense to me, especially when thinking of unused CSS and JS and I guess negative impacts on core web vitals (https://web.dev/vitals/).
First input delay and cumulative layout shift are most certainly a problem and in some cases also largest contentful paint.
We could have a proof of concept page with no overlays (and decent web vitals) and a subdomain with overlay that could be used for comparison.
