PHP Warning raised when Virtual Property Hooks are serialized on Models

Virtual property hooks on Models seem to cause PHP Warnings whenever the Model is serialized. The exact warning is: WARNING serialize(): "<HOOK_NAME>" returned as member variable from __sleep() but does not exist in <PROJECT>eval()'d code.

There is a workaround: overriding __sleep from Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Model and changing its implementation from:

to

        $this->attributeCastCache = [];
        $this->relationAutoloadCallback = null;
        $this->relationAutoloadContext = null;

        return array_keys(get_mangled_object_vars(this));
    }

Steps To Reproduce

1. Create a new Laravel project
2. In the User model, add this virtual property hook:

    public string $prop {
        get => 'prop';
    }

3. Serialize and Unserialize the model. For example, in a Tinker console:

unserialize(serialize(new User))

This results in the serialization working, but it raises a PHP warning.

Hi. Besides the fact that the issue is legit and the proposed solution solves it, can you please elaborate why would you use property hooks on a model? Is this related to columns from db?

@macropay-solutions There's a few good reasons to do it. If your codebase uses Accessors / Mutators a lot, they can be 1-to-1 replaced with hooks now that they're a feature of the language itself.

You can also use hooks to enforce classes having certain properties via an interface, which you could never do before. So you can define an interface that forces your model to have certain database columns (e.g created_at / updated_at)

In laravel Accesors/Mutators are not to be replaced with property hooks because the Model (active record) does not work like that in regards to db columns. You can use property hooks for other things and overwrite the __sleep function in an abstract BaseModel or use a trait to overwrite it to fix this issue. There are several discussions about this and people still think The Model is a DTO or Entity like in Symfony.

@macropay-solutions Thanks for the links. I actually agree fully. I do think the case can be made for virtual hooks specifically (which have no underlying database column). But yeah, using a backed hook with ordinary columns might be awkward.

In my real-world use case I was using virtual hooks to access settings tied to a model in a different table. So I just had a ton that looked like

And these were replacing Laravel accessors/mutators the same.

Sure you can cover also this case of virtual property hook.

set => $this->settings()->set(Setting::AllowedToEmail, $value);

If settings is a relation, set is not a method in relation. Is that a macro? What is it doing? Updating the relation?

Model are already handled correctly for queue, so I'm not sure manual serialize() and unserialize() should be handled as well. Moving this to Ideas for now.

@crynobone It's true that queues work correctly - but this error occurs elsewhere in the framework, and manifested itself in our live application as a crash. I'd recommend promoting it up to an Issue, but it's definitely a little niche.

Other than raw serialize, I've seen it in at least 2 places:

When calling Cache::set / Cache::get on a model:
