Didn't work with Debian 13

I keep a lot of things on my 8 desktops, and when I have to reboot or just re-login, it's a real pain having to open and re-organize everything.
I did a google and it came up with Mate-session-manager, so I thought I'd try it. It had a minor problem with Libre-office and I said logout anyway.
When I then logged in again, all my desktops were blank. Not what I was hoping for. Should I have set something up beforehand?
The man page doesn't imply anything like that. Is this a bug, or user-error? Help??

Session saving in MATE is NOT the default, you have to turn it on in dconf-editor at
org>mate>session>auto-save-session and it can only save state for applications which support MATE/GNOME 2 session saving which is mostly some of the MATE apps.

Firefox can save its tabs to come back up at browser restart, but you will still have to start it yourself
