[SOLVED] True RTX Video HDR support for MPV

I salute every amazing developer who contributes to MPV! Love the tools/app
RTX Video HDR is a feature that's still missing from MPV as far as I can tell.
That is not to be confused with RTX HDR that can indeed be turned ON in MPV, even though it's not ideal for video content.
It would be lovely if it'd be possible to get the 'real deal' RTX Video HDR support. At this point multiple generations of Nvidia RTX graphics cards can make use of it. It'd be awesome to have the option for MPV!

EDIT: I see now that there IS a mention of RTX Videos HDR but I am not sure what config settings are necessary to trigger it and what other settings can be used to tweak it (if needed at all)

I believe I now configured the RTX Video HDR feature correctly!

But I do have some more questions/small issues. Mainly:
Trying to playback a grainy, old 1080p show the highlights on things like bright indoor lamps seem to have a 'boiling pixels' effect. I wonder if this can be reduced with some other tricks or settings, if anyone knows help me out please. Sometimes it's barely noticeable, sometimes it's really distracting. It's basically constant shimmering on bright highlights. Maybe it's the film grain?

For anyone in the future who runs into this thread from Google Search, I wrote some basic instructions for getting RTX Video HDR up and running at all. You can retrace what I did as follows:

1. In Nvidia App in Video settings tab you must enable RTX Video HDR and configure it as you please.
   I referenced this thread to get the settings that seem to make sense for my particular display
   In my case - I am using Console HDR mode on Asus XG32UCWG, which has 740 nits peak. So my settings for RTX Video HDR in Nvidia App are:

Peak brightness (nits): 740
Middle grey (nits): 35 (using the formula for Gamma 2.2, targeting 160 nits paper white as per the formula from the Reddit thread I linked above)
Contrast (%): 25
Saturation (%): -25

2. Then you want a profile inside your mpv.conf to ensure RTX Video HDR only activates when you want it, that is with SDR content. Something like this will suffice to start with:

profile-desc=RTX Video HDR Automatically Enabled
profile-cond=get("video-params/gamma") == "bt.1886" and get("video-target-params/max-luma") > 203 and p.current_vo == "gpu-next"
profile-restore=copy

target-colorspace-hint=auto
vf-pre=@rtx-hdr:d3d11vpp=nvidia-true-hdr

3. And finally you must enable HDR in Windows 11 before opening MPV and playing any SDR file.

So assuming RTX Videos HDR is what I'm looking at with the line "vf-pre=@rtx-hdr:d3d11vpp=nvidia-true-hdr" in my MPV.conf, then - the same settings in the same menu of Nvidia App control both Nvidia RTX HDR and Nvidia RTX Video HDR

I'm not sure that your two assumptions follows anything in particular. The first about it being 1:1 is based on what exactly? The second makes zero sense to me. I'm not saying you are wrong btw. I'm just asking because I don't understand any of the logic.

It is 100% the case that RTX Videos HDR is controlled by the Nvidia App settings under Video tab. To set them up correctly I used the reddit thread which did the legwork of figuring out what settings to use for desirable outcome

There's only so many ways I can ask the same question. That's why I ended it so that it wouldn't degenerate into an argument. But you have taken that the wrong way too and here you are in an argument. I asked a question, you didn't understand it. No problem. None of this is important so just drop it.

@ is just the label, it does no effect on the filter itself.

To the best of my knowledge, this features is working just fine.
