SH1106 vs SSD1306

I have a project where I am using SH1106 (SPI mode) but I am finding the SSD1306 is more available. Their datasheets look to be the same. Are these interchangeable using the u8g2 library? Are there differences I need to be aware of?

The most important difference is the width of the internal display RAM.
SH1106: 132x64
SSD1306: 128x64
This means you may find for example a 132x64 OLED, which then can only contain the SH1106
On the other side, a 128x64 OLED be driven by both display drivers, however for the SH1106 it depends on the 126x64 OLED vendor where exactly the visual OLED area is placed. Often the visual display area for a SH1106 is centered within the SH1106 display memory. This means, there are two columns of random pixel visible if you try to drive a SH1106 with a SSD1306 driver.

Anyhow, u8g2 will usually take care, if you use the correct driver.
