File open dialog tremendously slow to build file lists on MacOS

(I'm a Mac using refugee from coot 0.9 trying to adapt to coot-1).

In some directories the Coot open file dialogue takes (literally) minutes to list the files.

I don't know. I do know that GTK4 recently substantially updated their file browser.
Maybe it's related to network or external drives?

There are a few image display errors - don't know if that could be related:
e.g. (MacCoot:36116): Gtk-WARNING **: 14:22:57.231: Failed to load icon /Applications/ccp4-9/coot_py3/share/icons/Adwaita/scalable/places/user-home-symbolic.svg: Error displaying image

It is slow accessing the main hard drive: I did some "timing".

1. Click on Home: 0.5-1s.
2. Click on Downloads: 19s (first 8s nothing happens, then some "page" icons appear next to the existing file list from the Home folder, then 10s with flickering blue circle until Downloads contents appear.
3. Click on Home again: 12s with flickering blue circle.
4. Click onDownloads again: 34s (22, then icons appear, 10 then contents appear).
5. Click on Home again: 1s
6. Click on Downloads again: 28s
   etc.

I've not noticed this in any other software, but then I don't know if anything i have is using gtk4.

I guess we need a minimal "test-the-file-open-dialog" and see if that has the same problems.

I just install 1.20 via homebrew and don't have the same behaviour.
