I've created a PR to include --with-vte now, brewsci/homebrew-bio#2184 . After the CI, I will merge the PR.
By the way, please consider incorporating the following modifications into your source code. These are the tweaks required to compile on recent macOS or Linux with Homebrew.

@YoshitakaMo the latest homebrew formula fails on Mac (OS X 15.7.7) with --HEAD:

Error: inreplace failed
src/molecule-class-info-backup.cc:
  expected replacement of "fabsf" with "fabs"

I've removed "inreplace" tweaks now (brewsci/homebrew-bio@f67a813). The issue should be resolved.

I plan to release 1.3.2 within a week or so. It has a few more tidy-ups.

@pemsley The VTE doesn't work at all for me on the homebrew build on --HEAD - it loads, and the cursor blinks, but it does not accept any input.. Also there is an AI button which doesn't work, and the VTE can only be resized to a minimum of 8 lines
