Description

When attempting to access Edit>Channel Locations for a loaded dataset, a window pops up:

#### Steps to Reproduce

1. Import EEG dataset using BIOSIG from EDF/EDF+, etc.
2. Select channels from EMOTIV dataset - selecting only channels 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 (out of 54 total) using Edit>Select data
3. Confirm correct channels selected using Plot>Scroll data
4. Edit>Channel locations to configure for EPOCX headset - after clicking Channel locations from Edit menu, the error box pops up

#### Expected behavior: Instead of error box, I expected another box to pop up to allow me to upload a .ced file and verify channel locations by plotting 2-D and 3-D plots
#### Actual behavior: Error box, unable to configure channel locations

Research

pop_chanedit opens the lookup-channel-locations prompt before the channel editor when standard labels are present. That prompt calls dipfitdefs unconditionally, so a channel-location workflow can fail before the user can load a channel file if DIPFIT is not on the MATLAB path.

Relevant code

• functions/popfunc/pop_chanedit.m#L893-L905 - builds the template list from template_models after calling dipfitdefs
• functions/popfunc/pop_chanedit.m#L979-L990 - maps standard template aliases through template_models

Proposed Fix

Keep the existing DIPFIT-backed templates when dipfitdefs is available, but let pop_chanedit build its channel-template list without throwing when it is not. I will validate with a focused command that removes DIPFIT from the path and exercises the lookup path, plus a core eeglab('nogui') sample-data smoke check if local MATLAB licensing allows it.

Opened #943 to guard pop_chanedit channel-template lookup when DIPFIT is not on the MATLAB path.

Validation: git diff --check passed. MATLAB R2024b batch mode requested MathWorks account sign-in before running, and Octave is not installed locally.

Validation:

• MATLAB R2024b focused command: removed DIPFIT from the path, confirmed dipfitdefs was unavailable, and pop_chanedit(..., 'lookup', 'standard-10-5-cap385.elp') imported Fz/Cz locations successfully.
• MATLAB R2024b core smoke: eeglab('nogui'), loaded sample_data/eeglab_data.set, and ran eeg_checkset(EEG) successfully.
