Description

Portable viewer does not run.

Reproduction steps

I've downloaded 'Second_Life_26_1_1_23074791527_x86_64_Portable.zip' and simply extracted it to a folder on a USB stick. I was expectinf the viewer to start after clicking 'Second Life Viewer.exe' but all I got was a notification.

The velopacklog file says:

Can you provide viewer logs from %appdata%/secondlife/logs, not velopac logs please? This is a runtime error.

It being portable is a misnomer as it stores data on disk (user settings), logs. Potentially the problem is that viewer can't access your usb drive or disk to read/write files.

Did it unpack correctly? Is F:\Software\SecondLife\current\skins\default\xui\en\strings.xml file present and opens?

It isn't actually portable. We should either make it portable (store personal data to viewer's folder instead of main disk, register slurs handler on init etc) or remove 'portable' from the name.

The file is where it's supposed to be and can be read from the stick with vs-code.

I'm just an average person, which is why I thought portable meant that I could run it from an usb drive and so I tried it.
I think that unless you want to give the support people a lot of extra work, you should atleast explain what 'portable' is meant to be and what the viewer is for, or, indeed, just name it something else.

Just want to let you know that the viewer runs fine if the zip is extracted to a folder in 'Program Files'.

The issue is your F: drive is FAT32 or exFAT formatted. There was a commit to fix this which isn't present in 2026.1 or 2026.1.1. If you are able to reformat your USB to NTFS it will work (until the fix is out which is in 2026.2).
