Should consider switching to setuptools or distutils for the installation; this will also make it easier to pull in any dependencies if necessary in the future. Can still wrap in a Makefile.
This would also let us switch to using entry points, rather than a #!, since that will not work on Windows. It also solves the problem of cross-platform paths for the install.
