Briefing

We're happy for things to go more free form. If its a great conversation can extend to 30 minutes or so but don't feel the need to, expect most will be 10-20 min. I'd try and find a quiet both or area of the conference for the interview but expect it should be relatively quiet as its during the sessions. Would be great to get a good diversity of backgrounds but also if someone is keen then happy with that. Fine to veer from the questions if you feel like you want to more on a specific area.

• Our process is that we'll record this interview, transcribe it and do some manual tidying up, send it over for you to check and edit as you see fit and then publish this on the Society of RSE website, are you okay with that?
• Can you say who you are and what your current role is?
• How did you become an RSE?
• When did you first hear the term “RSE”?
• What is your favourite thing about your work and being an RSE?
• And what is the least favourite?
• What’s the most unexpected part about being a RSE?
• Did you already have any interactions with the RSE Society and the RSE community? If yes, which? (e.g. member of the Society, attend events, RSE conference, active in RSE Slack, …?)
• Do you see yourself as an academic, researcher, software engineer, technician…? All of it? Something else? A mix of one or two terms?
• What do you see as your most likely future career path from here? And what would be your ideal career path?
• In your view, how could RSEs be better supported in their work? What do you need? What is missing?
• What advice do you have to individuals looking to start a career in Research Software Engineering?
• Which question did we not ask you which we should have (and what is the answer)?
