Marquee LCD: 1920x440 will not work?

Hello,
I have a small marquee display (11,26 inch) for my arcade machine, that I want to use additionally for some information/news on my MacBook. It's connected via TB/USB-C -> HDMI.
I think I did all the ways shown in discussion/wiki to add a new custom resolution. But all I get to work is 1920x540. 1920x440 will be shown on display mode, u can select it, but nothing happens.

On my windows machine (display connected via DP → HDMI) it works fine. Without any special configuration.
So, who can help?

Hi there - the standard mode switch may not work with such an exotic resolution, but you should be able to force-switch the mode (although the desktop will remain cropped).

While the app is running, enter this in Terminal:

/Applications/BetterDisplay.app/Contents/MacOS/BetterDisplay get -n=ak -connectionModeListAll

Then look for the 1920x440 resolution line and its long mode id number and enter the following:

/Applications/BetterDisplay.app/Contents/MacOS/BetterDisplay set -n=ak -connectionMode=xxxxx

where xxxxx is the long mode identifier number you selected.

Hi there,
that works! The display shows the picture in correct resolution (1920x440) and refesh rate (60Hz).
2 more questions:

1. Sometimes the screen flickers or has some ghost pictures. Is there a solution?
2. After standby of my MacBook I have to restart the mode via terminal. Can I restart it automatically with BD or do I need MacOS/terminal magic ?

• I am not sure about flicker/ghost picture - is that a display issue?
• with this custom mode you'll need to have a script that runs on wake that switches to this mode. I plan to improve GUI support for these low-level mode switches, but since it's really a hack and might confuse the general user audience, I am a bit hesitant about it. Those who need such special arrangements are usually happy to script things anyway. :)

I don't think it's a display issue. Windows/raspberry works fine. Here´s a little movie from this.
Scripting is no problem, but BD has so much options and I don't want to invent thinks that are on board ;)

The display has a display foil on it... so it´s not damaged ;)

Well, this might be a DCP issue of some kind, I don't think the app can help much as generating the actual video signal from the framebuffer data is not something it can control. You can try changing refresh rate, use different color mode if available etc, maybe(?) that helps.
