Subject: HDR option disappears when using HiDPI scaling on 4K@120Hz monitor (macOS) I am using a 4K@120Hz monitor connected via a USB-C to DisplayPort cable. While HDR works perfectly at the native resolution (3840×2160 @ 120Hz), the native UI is too small for my daily workflow. To improve readability, I switched to a HiDPI scaled resolution (while maintaining the 3840×2160 physical output). However, the HDR toggle disappears in System Settings as soon as any scaling is applied. I have tried using BetterDisplay Pro with the "HDR configuration protect" feature enabled, but the issue persists. Interestingly, I once managed to keep the HDR toggle visible after switching the refresh rate from 59.94Hz to 120Hz, but the setting reverted and the toggle vanished again after the laptop woke from sleep. Currently, I can use a Variable Refresh Rate (48-120Hz), but HDR remains unavailable under HiDPI mode. Any insights on how to force HDR to stay active while using scaling?

Yes, it's a known macOS limitation. You can get around it using the app on some Macs - just set the resolution to 60Hz with the proper resolution, enable HDR, then hold Shift while opening the Refresh Rate menu and select 120Hz (make sure you have the "wave" icon in front). I'll streamline this probably in the next app version. |
