Is auto-sync supposed to work bidirectionally?

When I update a note in Zotero, the MD file gets auto-synced as expected.
But when I update the MD file, the Zotero counterpart stays the same; it only syncs if I use the "sync now" option in the ellipsis menu.

Is this how it is supposed to work?

If Zotero window is not active (in the background) or a note editor of the note is active, the auto syncing is skipped. If you still think this is a bug, please report an issue.
