Project generated from 2.44.1 could not be opened on Xcode 15.0.1: 'future Xcode project file format' error

When opening the generated project on Xcode 15.0.1, I get

The project at ‘/path/to/my/generated/xcodeproj’ cannot be opened because it is in a future Xcode project file format. Adjust the project format using a compatible version of Xcode to allow it to be opened by this version of Xcode.

even if I set xcodeVersion: "15.0" (or any lower version down to "12.0") in my xcodegen.yml configuration.

By doing some attempts, I discovered that the generated objectVersion = 77 seemingly is the cause of my issue: if I manually set it to 60 or lower value the project is properly opened by my Xcode.

Had a similar issue, an xcodeproj command failed in the CI process because it didn't recognise version 77.

I "fixed" the issue by putting a script in options.postGenCommand that hard-resets the object version like so:

options:
    postGenCommand: ruby scripts/fixObjectVersion.rb

and the script fixObjectVersion.rb:

file_path = 'MY_PROJECT.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj'
new_object_version = 60
contents = File.read(file_path)
contents.gsub!(/objectVersion = \d+;/, "objectVersion = #{new_object_version};")
File.write(file_path, contents)

This is quite hacky but it does mitigate the issue for now. I tried doing it using xcodeproj, but:

• xcodeproj seems to have no setter for objectVersion
• xcodeproj was the failure point in the CI process, so it would be strange if it could fix itself

Even simpler than the good @TomQDRS 's solution, I am using a simple sed command for the postGenCommand script:

options:
  postGenCommand: sed -i.bak -E 's|objectVersion = [0-9]+|objectVersion = 60|' MY_PROJECT.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj

that requires no additional script file.

I've implemented the ability to select the Xcode project version in this PR, but it looks like @yonaskolb doesn't have time to review it😢
