SEHeadTracking

Head Tracking Plugin for Space Engineers.

Head tracking is commonly used in flight simulator games to use head movements to look around. If you don't have a head tracking system yet, no worries! As long as you have a webcam, you can easily get in on the action, thanks to opentrack!

NOTE: Head tracking is disabled in characted first person view by default for better playability. It can be enabled in the Head Tracking Options menu.

Getting started

Installation

The Head Tracking plugin is installed using the Plugin Loader. Install the Plugin Loader as per instructions and enable Head Tracking plugin from Plugins in the game main menu.

Options menu

The plugin adds a Head Tracking options menu into the Options menu. Alternatively, the options menu can be accessed in game by pressing Enter to type a chat message and typing

/ht_options

Running with opentrack

The plugin has been tested with opentrack, but should work with other software that supports the freetrack protocol.

In opentrack, select freetrack 2.0 as the output.

Setup opentrack to track your head to your preference. Some options are highlighted below.

Either start opentrack before you launch Space Engineers or during the game. Head tracking should start working immediately.

NOTE: If any of the axes seem inverted, you can invert the axes in the Head Tracking Options menu in Space Engineers or you can go to Options in opentrack, select Output and select Invert on the problematic axis.

Opentrack with neuralnet tracker

This one doesn't need anything other than a webcam! Just select neuralnet tracker as input in opentrack and you're good to go!

Opentrack with the Aruco tracker

If you do not yet have a head tracking setup, you can easily make one! Just print out the Aruco marker, glue it to you forehead and choose aruco - paper marker tracker as input in opentrack. It works better than you would expect!
Be sure to have the marker at a slight angle to the camera!

Aruco on forehead.

Test mode

If you don't have a head tracker or you just want to see the plugin working, you can enable head movement with the test mode. The test mode can be enabled in the Head Tracking Options menu. Or using a chat message. Press Enter to write a chat message and type

/ht_testmode on
