iOS is currently broken due to issues with the ble library that is being replaced soon. so im gonna consider that to not be a merge blocking issue |

This pull request effectively un-does #9 - it was not a smart API and will be replaced by #24 in future
this is almost ready - works on android and needs validation on iOS. My own system has been not working especially great on like iOS 15.... so yeah.
