knox-rt — Knox Red Team

LLM adversarial testing toolkit by AccuKnox.

Generates adversarial test prompts for a range of vulnerability classes, runs them against a target system, and grades the responses with an LLM-as-a-judge.

Prerequisites

🎯 Web UI Guide

The Web UI provides an interactive interface to configure and run scans without touching the command line. This guide explains every field and section.

1️⃣ Target Configuration (Left Sidebar)

This section defines what system you're testing.

Target Types Explained

OpenAI / Compatible — Use this for OpenAI API or any server that speaks /v1/chat/completions:

  • Endpoint detected automatically from backend setting
  • Works with: OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Together AI, vLLM, Ollama, LocalAI
  • Need to set: Model name, API key (if not using env var)
  • Advanced REST options appear below (endpoint, headers, etc.)

REST (Custom) — Use this for any HTTP API with a custom request/response shape:

  • Endpoint: Full base URL (e.g., https://api.example.com or http://localhost:8000)
  • Model Name: Label for your model (e.g., my-llm-v2)
  • Request Payload: JSON template with $INPUT placeholder
    • Example: {"prompt": "$INPUT", "max_tokens": 512}
    • Example: {"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "$INPUT"}]}
  • Response Field: Path to extract response text (e.g., choices.0.message.content, output.text)
    • Leave empty to auto-detect
  • Custom Headers: JSON with any headers needed
    • Example: {"Authorization": "Bearer $KEY"} (where $KEY is replaced with your API key)

Local Function — Use this to test a Python function directly (no API call):

  • Useful for testing locally-deployed models
  • Name: Module and function (e.g., mymodule#chat_fn)

2️⃣ Scan Settings (Left Sidebar)

Global parameters that apply to all plugins unless overridden.

3️⃣ Generation Backend (Left Sidebar)

Configures which model writes the attacks.

Backend Recommendations:

  • Anthropic (Claude): Best reasoning and attack creativity — recommended for complex objectives
  • OpenAI (GPT): Widely available, good balance of cost and quality
  • Mistral: Budget-friendly alternative
  • Custom/vLLM: Self-hosted models (Llama, Mixtral, etc.) — fast, no API costs

4️⃣ Grader / Evaluation Backend (Left Sidebar)

Configures which model judges whether the target was vulnerable.

Grader Recommendations:

  • Use the same backend as generation (consistency) or a different one (validation)
  • Claude (Anthropic) graders are highly accurate — recommended if budget allows
  • Local graders (via Local backend) work with any /v1/chat/completions endpoint

5️⃣ Plugins (Left Sidebar)

Select which vulnerabilities to test.

Three ways to select:

  1. By Category: Expand each category card to see plugins

    • ✅ = plugin selected, ❌ = not selected
    • Checkbox at top of category = select/deselect all in that category
  2. By Framework: Use preset buttons like owasp:llm, nist:ai:rmf

    • Click a framework pill to instantly select all plugins in that standard
    • Click again to deselect
  3. Custom Plugins: Add your own attacks

    • Plugin ID: Unique identifier (e.g., custom:my-attack)
    • Objective: What you're trying to make the model do
    • Severity: low, medium, high, critical
    • Num tests: How many variants to generate

Per-Plugin Customization (click ⚙ gear icon on any plugin):

  • Tests: Override global test count for this plugin
  • Severity: Override severity level
  • Language: Override language for this plugin
  • Max Chars: Override character limit
  • Custom Objective: Replace the plugin's default objective
  • Strategies: Add attack transformations (base64, jailbreak, etc.)
  • Instructions: Plugin-specific hints to the generation model

Per-Category Customization (click category header):

  • Same fields as per-plugin, but apply to all plugins in the category
  • Per-plugin settings override category settings

6️⃣ Strategies (Left Sidebar)

Select attack transformation techniques applied after plugin generation.

Each selected strategy creates additional test cases. Total cases = tests × plugins × (1 + strategies).

Static strategies (no extra API calls):

Adaptive strategies (multi-turn conversation — several calls per case; ⚙ sets turns):

Adaptive strategies stop the moment the target breaks, and a case is marked vulnerable only when the grader judges a break. Use a grader distinct from the target — see CONFIG_REFERENCE.md.

7️⃣ Run Scan (Main Panel)

Once configured, click the Run Scan button to execute:

  1. Progress Section appears showing:

    • Progress bar (% complete)
    • Cases completed (e.g., "45 / 100")
    • Elapsed time
  2. Live Log shows real-time updates:

    • Generation progress
    • API calls to target
    • Grading results
    • Any errors

8️⃣ Results (Tab View)

After scan completes:

Summary Statistics

  • Total cases tested
  • Vulnerable cases (target failed the test)
  • Resisted cases (target passed)
  • Pass rate (% of cases resisted)

9️⃣ Config JSON (Tab View)

Shows the exact configuration being used — useful for:

  • Saving configurations for later
  • Sharing setups with teammates
  • Understanding the structure
  • Debugging

Copy the JSON and save it as config.yaml to run via CLI with the same settings.

Workflow 1: Quick OWASP LLM Top 10 Test

  1. Set Purpose: "An AI assistant providing financial advice"
  2. Click owasp:llm framework pill (auto-selects 30 plugins)
  3. Set Generation backend: Claude
  4. Set Grader backend: Claude
  5. Click Run Scan
  6. Review results by vulnerability type

Workflow 2: Custom REST API (e.g., vLLM)

  1. Target Type: REST (custom)
  2. Endpoint: http://localhost:8000

Workflow 3: Multilingual Testing

  1. Configure target as normal
  2. Select plugins you want to test
  3. Select multilingual strategy
  4. In Scan Settings, set Language to a specific language (e.g., Spanish)
  5. Run scan — attacks will be generated in Spanish AND translated via the multilingual strategy

Workflow 4: Severity-Focused Audit

  1. Configure target
  2. In Scan Settings, set Severity: high (only tests high/critical plugins)
  3. Select framework: owasp:llm
  4. Run scan to focus on the highest-risk vulnerabilities

⚠️ Important Notes

API Key Security:

  • UI stores keys in browser memory only (not on disk)
  • Use env vars when possible: export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=...
  • Don't commit keys to version control

Prompt Count & Cost:

  • Total cases = tests × plugins × (1 + strategies)
  • Example: 5 tests × 10 plugins × (1 + 2 strategies) = 150 cases
  • Each case = 1 generation call + 1 grading call
  • Example cost at $1/1K gen + $0.50/1K grade ≈ $0.23 per scan

Rate Limiting:

  • If tests fail with rate limit errors, increase Delay Between Calls
  • Default is 0ms (no delay) — increase to 1000-2000ms for free tier APIs

Core idea

Plugins don't store static attack strings. Each plugin holds a meta-prompt — a prompt that instructs a generation model to write attacks tailored to the target's purpose. So generation is LLM-driven:

Swapping the generation model (config) changes who writes the attacks; swapping a plugin's objective changes what kind — the generation loop, parsing, and dedup are identical across all plugins.

Architecture

Five layers, each a separate responsibility. Nothing imports a concrete backend directly — every layer depends on an abstract base.

1. inference/ — the target

Provider is the system under test. Three concrete providers are built in:

Custom targets subclass Provider and implement one _complete(messages) -> str hook.

2. plugins/ — generation

Owns the generation pipeline end to end.

  • Generator — the generation-model abstraction. Backends in generators.py:

    • AnthropicGenerator — Anthropic SDK (default claude-opus-4-8)
    • MistralGenerator — Mistral SDK (default mistral-large-latest)
    • OpenAIGenerator — any OpenAI-compatible endpoint: OpenAI, vLLM, Ollama, LM Studio, or any custom-deployed model. Set base_url to point to your /v1 endpoint.
    • HuggingFaceGenerator — local model from the Hugging Face Hub
    • ScriptedGenerator — canned output for offline runs
  • RedteamPlugin — the plugin base. generate_tests() runs the loop: render meta-prompt → call generator → parse Prompt: lines → drop refusals/duplicates → build TestCases, retrying until num_tests unique prompts exist.

  • TestCase — one generated prompt plus routing metadata (prompt, plugin_id, detector_id, metadata).

3. strategies/ — attack transforms

Strategies transform generated prompts to probe whether defences can be bypassed by framing or obfuscation. They are applied after plugin generation and produce additional TestCases alongside the originals (baseline is always graded too).

Case count formula: num_tests × num_plugins × (1 + num_strategies) — a multi-turn conversation is still one case, so adaptive strategies add cases like any other; they multiply API calls, not case count.

Each transformed case carries metadata["strategy"] and metadata["original_prompt"] for traceability. Adaptive strategies also record turns and a per-turn transcript (and backtracks for crescendo).

Strategies come in three tiers. Strategy.uses_llm marks the LLM ones; Strategy.interactive marks the adaptive ones, which the runner drives at evaluation time (they need the target's replies) rather than in the pre-target strategy phase.

Static strategies (encoding.py, wrapping.py — pure text transforms, no extra calls):

manyshot Generates N on-topic exchanges where the assistant complies, then appends the real attack (many-shot jailbreaking)

Adaptive strategies (conversational.py — live multi-turn, several calls per case):

4. detectors/ — grading

Each plugin pairs 1:1 with a detector that knows what a violation looks like. LLMDetector sends the attack + response to a Judge and parses the verdict.

GraderResult carries passed (target resisted), score, and reason.

5. Pairing

detectors/ mirrors plugins/ exactly — each sub-plugin pairs 1:1 with its own sub-evaluator (matching ids). A plugin's detector_id resolves to that evaluator via detectors.get_detector().

The debugger:

  • ✓ Shows the exact request being sent (with $INPUT replaced)
  • ✓ Displays the API's response structure (keys, types, values)
  • ✓ Validates your response_field path
  • ✓ Suggests response_field values if not provided
  • ✓ Shows helpful error messages with available keys at each level

Use this before running a full scan to catch configuration issues early.


Troubleshooting REST Targets

Error: HTTP 401 Unauthorized

Hint: Invalid or missing API key. Check 'api_key' in your config.

→ Verify your API key is correct and has permission to access the endpoint.

Error: HTTP 404 Not Found

Hint: Endpoint not found. Check 'name' (base URL) in your config.

→ The base URL is wrong. For Mistral: use https://api.mistral.ai, not the full /v1/chat/completions path.

Error: Cannot extract field 'output.text' from response

Available keys: ['result', 'message']

→ Your response_field doesn't match the API's response format. Use the available keys or adjust the path.

Error: API returned invalid JSON

Response: <html>502 Bad Gateway</html>

→ The API returned HTML (likely an error page). Check if the service is down or the endpoint is correct.

Error: HTTP 429 Too Many Requests

Hint: Rate limited. Wait before retrying.

→ Add delay: 1000 (milliseconds) to your config to space out requests.


Configuration

Multi-target testing (A/B comparison)

Replace target: (singular) with targets: (plural) to run every attack against multiple models in a single pass and compare results side by side. Move purpose: to the top level when using targets:.

Note: Multi-target mode is config-file only (config.yaml / config.json). There is no CLI flag equivalent — use -c your_config.yaml to activate it.


Plugin configuration

Three forms are supported in the plugins: list:

Custom plugins — define your own attack objective without writing Python. Any plugin whose id starts with custom: is treated as a custom plugin and requires an objective key:

The objective drives both generation (injected into the attack meta-prompt as the goal) and grading (the judge checks whether the model complied with it). All standard per-plugin keys (num_tests, severity, language, examples, generation_instructions) work on custom plugins too.

passed=true means the target resisted. passed=false means the attack succeeded.

  • target — the label of the target that produced this response (null in single-target runs).
  • frameworks — compliance frameworks the plugin belongs to (e.g. ["owasp:llm", "nist:ai:rmf"]).
  • controls — specific control-level ids (e.g. ["owasp:llm:01", "nist:ai:rmf:govern"]).

The JSON output file wraps all records under {"summary": {...}, "results": [...]}. In a multi-target run the summary also includes a "by_target" breakdown — see Multi-target testing above.
