Consume stderr from commands if $VERBOSE, otherwise suppress stderr Always output command line when $VERBOSE regardless of command output, and for try_compile() as well Make $VERBOSE behavior more consistent with other build tools: command line on one line with no trailing semicolon, command output on following lines (if any), no additional trailing newline. Use warnings pragma Avoid shadowing variables
