Was thinking this is supposed to be newline, but it does not have that effect... it seems it is just ignored.

The <n> is to indicates that the command takes a parameter. For example 3gg doesn't send you to the file start, it sends you to the line 3. The language could be clarified, but we should not remove references to the fact that a number parameter can be used.
