mobiTopp is an open-source, agent-based travel demand modeling framework developed by the Institute for Transport Studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It simulates individual travel behavior over a week-long period, providing detailed insights into transportation patterns within a specified region.
- Multi-Agent Simulation: Each person in the study area is represented as an individual agent with specific attributes such as age, occupation, and mobility tool ownership (e.g., cars, bicycles, public transport passes).
- Weekly Activity Modeling: Simulates daily activities and travel decisions over a full week, capturing both routine and variable travel behaviors.
- Discrete Choice Models: Utilizes advanced decision-making models to simulate destination and mode choices, accounting for factors like household context and availability of mobility options.
- Synthetic Population Generation: Employs Iterative Proportional Updating to create a synthetic population that mirrors the real-world demographics of the study area.
- Integration Capabilities: Offers interfaces to tools like PTV Visum, MATSim, and FleetPy, with supplementary utilities in Python and R for extended analysis.
mobiTopp is versatile and can be applied to:
- Assessing the impact of new mobility services or policy measures on travel behavior.
- Evaluating transportation infrastructure projects.
- Studying the effects of demographic changes on travel demand.
The mobiTopp framework (originally EuroTopp around 1990), previously implemented in Java is now modernized and implemented in kotlin. It is available as an open-source project on GitHub mobiTopp GitHub repository.
