I developed this software program in c++ to calculate The Glasgow Coma Scale (gCSS), which is a scoring system used to describe the level of consciousness in a person following a traumatic brain injury. It is used to help gauge the severity of an acute brain injury.
The Glasgow Coma Scale (gCSS) is scored from 3 to 15, with 3 being the worst and 15 the best. It assesses three parameters: eye response or (eyeOpeningResponseRate), verbal response (verbaleResponse), and motor response (motorResponse), recorded individually (e.g., eyeStimulusScore2verbalScore3motorScore4 = gCSS 9).
• Severe TBI: gCSS ≤ 8 at admission.
• Moderate TBI: Traditionally, gCSS 9–12.
• Mild TBI: Traditionally, gCSS 13–15.
However, studies show that over one-third of patients with gCSS 13 have significant intracranial injuries, prompting a reevaluation. A gCSS score of 9–13 may better represent moderate risk for death or long-term disability, though this revised classification isn’t widely adopted yet.
