This should have the same effect, minus the error messages from a failed mkdir attempt which might be confusing.

PS: @rti not too sure if you preferred bash built-in
testshorthand (double brace) or POSIX shorthand (single brace), the biggest bikeshed I know, but happy to change it. 🙂
